A flower found in the Hawaiian islands but also available by some mainland florists.
Puakenikeni flowers, found on bushes or trees mainly in the Pacific Islands, are most often used to make lei (flower necklaces).
The translation of puakenikeni literally means, 'ten-cent flower' because its blooms were once strung and sold as ten-cent lei.
It has a strong, sweet gorgeous fragrance that resembles the gardenia.
The puakenikeni's colour can range from white to yellow / orange /gold as the flower ages . .
Fagraea berteriana (sometimes as F. berteroana), commonly known as the Pua keni keni or Perfume Flower Tree. It is indigenous to the Samoa Islands where it is known as the pua-lulu and occurs from New Caledonia to eastern Polynesia.
This beauty was photographed in Wailuku on Maui . .
