Description
The other road to Hāna . . a beautiful scenic route through Kāhikinui along the south eastern shoreline of the island of Maui Hawai'i on Pi'ilani Highway . . on a clear day you can see Big Island on the horizon . .
I wanted something different, something edgy, something unique and very special. And of all the images I took that day while exploring the island this one is my favourite. Pi'ilani Highway is also known as the back road to Hāna. This is a view of Manawainui from Pi'ilani Highway at Kāhikinui in early morning light when there was no traffic.
Piʻilani ("ascent to heaven" (born ca. 1577) ruled as the 15th Mōʻī of the island of Maui, as an independent kingdom within the islands of Hawaii in the later part of the 16th century. He is the first ruling Ali'i to unite the island under a single line. The Aliʻi nui of Maui was the supreme ruler of the island of Maui. The title or phrase Mōʻī is sometimes used for the title of the monarchs of Maui; however, it is not an ancient word in the Hawaiian language and has origins in the mid 19th century. They were sometimes referred to as Mōʻī beginning in the mid 19th century, and would later become commonly translated from the Hawaiian language into English as the word "king".
Paumakua, the first ruler of Maui, was thirty-first in line of descent from Wakea. In the beginning, from about Paumakua of Maui down to Kawaokaohele's reign, the Aliʻi nui of Maui only controlled the much larger western portion of the island while the chiefs of Hāna remained independent. Mauiloa had tried to unite the island once, but troubles with the Hāna chief continued. It was under Piʻilani's reign that he conquered the east and united Maui for the first time.
Ali'i Kamehameha c. 1736? – May 8 or 14, 1819 also known as King Kamehameha and Kamehameha the Great, (full Hawaiian name: Kalani Paiʻea Wohi o Kaleikini Kealiʻikui Kamehameha o ʻIolani i Kaiwikapu kauʻi Ka Liholiho Kūnuiākea) the great warrior united all the Hawaiian Islands and was the first ruler of the Kingdom of Hawaii. As ruler, Kamehameha took steps to ensure the islands remained a united realm.
